Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged officers and men of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to form a synergy with other security agencies in the state to check trans-border criminal activities, particularly along borders with the Benin Republic.
Abiodun gave the charge while receiving the new Comptroller of Immigration in charge of Ogun, Yakubu Jibrin, in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The governor, who stated that residents in the border areas always live in fear as a result of people who cross in, to perpetuate crimes and cross back to their countries, said: “I will like to appraise you of the fact that occasionally, we have problems with those who cross our borders from the Benin Republic, wandered into our state at times, responsible for one crime or the other and run back.
The governor, who applauded the Minister of Interior and Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for the establishment of a passport office in Sagamu, urged the new comptroller to expedite action in resolving some of the problems working against the timely issuance of international passports to the indigenes of the state.
Jibrin, who said his officers and men were ready to police the nation’s borders to checkmate criminals crossing over to cause havoc in the country, appreciated the state government for refurbishing three of its operational vehicles, donating one new patrol van, as well as three new motorbikes, saying: “This will go a long way in assisting my men to discharge their constitutional responsibilities more effectively.”
