From Lateef Dada, Osogbo
The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Prof Odunayo Adebooye, on Thursday, begged the newly inducted Nurses of the university to stay and build Nigeria.
He made the plea at the 3rd induction/oath-taking ceremony of the 40 registered Nurses in Osogbo.
The VC who noted that the Nurses have qualified to work anywhere in the world said he would prefer them to stay to build the country, saying “Nigeria will change for the better.
“You are qualified to work anywhere in the world but I will prefer you work in Nigeria because some of you want to jet out of this country,” he added.
Prof Adebooye also advised the Nigerian government to create enabling environment for the Nurses to prevent them from being hijacked by other countries.
Speaking with journalists after the induction, Prof Adebooye said, “to retain these Nurses to service our healthcare industry, you must try to create an enabling environment for them to live. Conditions that will make them happy, good salary, good facilities in the hospital that will make them exploit the knowledge that they have gained in the university and put the knowledge to practice.
“All we have to do is to replicate the conditions that exist over there in our society otherwise, we will be losing them because the constitution does not allow us to prevent anybody from seeking opportunities anywhere the person wants all over the world,” he added.
The Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr Faruk Abubakar, who inducted the Nurses, urged them to adhere to the ethics of the profession.
Represented by Aliyu Adamu, the Registrar advised the inductees to put into practice all they have been taught in the university and prove that they are qualified.
The provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof C. O. Alebiosu, and the coordinator, Department of Nursing Sciences, K. A. Adesina, urged the inductees to always abide by the ethics of the Nursing profession.
