Before now, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigerian authorities have always rued the low voter turnout on elections days in the country. The officials would lament like a celebrant who organized an elaborate ceremony with sumptuous dishes only for invited guests not to show up. Alas, Nigerians are beginning to realize that all the ululations about voter apathy were just the officials shedding crocodile tears. If not, how else does one explain that in the face of Nigerians’ huge awakening on the need for them to participate in the ongoing continuous voter registration (CVR), INEC has been caught napping? The failures of the electoral body have now added impetus to the conspiracy theory of the system being rigged to frustrate or dissuade enlightened voters from being part of the process of selecting the leader.
A case in point is the plight of residents of Amuwo Odofin and Alaba market in Lagos State who closed their shops and businesses in order to go for the CVR only to be disappointed by INEC officials. What is more disturbing about the failure of the electoral commission to simply register these enthusiastic citizens is that they had issued a prior notice about the closure of the international market on Thursday to allow traders to go for their permanent voter cards (PVCs). Although this information was all over the place and trended on social media, INEC failed to prepare for the crowd who trooped to its offices to participate in the exercise. Worse still, these patriotic citizens were attacked by hoodlums who would not have harassed or harmed them if the registration process at the INEC office was as it should be.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned major political parties in the country against fielding Christian/Christian or Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket in 2023.
Naija News reports that the Christian association made this known on Friday in a statement by its National Secretary, Joseph Bade Daramola.
The two major political parties (the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)) have produced Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar respectively as their presidential candidates. Both of them are Muslims.
With Atiku searching for a souther Christian to balance his ticket, reports emerged on Friday that the APC is looking to pair Tinubu with a strong Muslim northerner ahead of the 2023 election.
Reports have emerged claiming various caucuses of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have commenced intense push to produce the running mate for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
It was gathered that eight names have been penciled down as possible running mate for the former Lagos State governor but northern political clout and the fear of a Muslim-Muslim ticket is currently leaving APC leaders in a dilemma.
The eight names that have so far emerged included Governors Babagana Zulum (Borno), Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano) and Samuel Lalong (Plateau); former governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima (who led Tinubu campaignorganisation); former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.
Top critic of the APC and Bishop of Catholic Diocese in Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah has surprisingly emerged among those been considered.
The presidency has declared that despite having a preferred candidate in the build-up to the presidential primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari didn’t impose his wish on the leaders and members of the party.
The special adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina made this known in an opinion statement released on Thursday night titled ‘Knock, Knock! Who’s There?’.
According to him, as a true democrat, President Buhari decided to remain neutral in the entire process despite having a series of meeting with party leaders and stakeholders on how to ensure the APC produces the best candidate for the 2023 elections.
Naija News recalls the APC primaries which was concluded on Wednesday, 8th June produced former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu as the party’s flagbearer.
The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said his preferred running mate will be announced soon.
Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos, stated that the choice of his running mate is his right and would keep the name of the candidate in his “pocketbook”.
The APC Presidential candidate said this on Thursday while speaking to State House Correspondents after visiting President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.
Tinubu was accompanied on the visit by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and the Chief Executive Officer of Oando Plc, Wale Tinubu.
President Muhammadu Buhari has applauded the emergence of Bola Tinbu as the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tinubu polled 1,271 votes to emerge the winner of the just-concluded presidential primary election held on Tuesday and Wednesday at Eagle Square in Abuja, Naija News reports.
In a letter addressed to Tinubu on Thursday, Buhari promised to work with the former Governor of Lagos State, his campaign team and the party to achieve victory in the 2023 presidential election.
The Nigerian leader commended Tinubu for what he described as his impressive acceptance speech which stressed the importance of unity in the party.
A former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal has boasted that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu will win the 2023 election.
He stated that Tinubu will defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar even in his home state of Adamawa.
Lawal submitted that Tinubu is a good man and wouldn’t have any difficulty winning votes in any part of Nigeria because he has helped so many people in different parts of the country.
He added that they know every nook and cranny of Adamawa State and have all the material and intellectual resources needed to not only defeat Atiku in Adamawa but ensure total victory for Tinubu across the country.
The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi has won the Ebonyi South senatorial ticket of the All Progressives Congress.
Umahi won the senatorial ticket of the APC in the re-run primary.
This is coming after Umahi lost in the presidential primary of the ruling party which was won by the party’s National Leader, Bola Tinubu.
The governor’s younger brother, Austin Umahi two weeks ago won the senatorial ticket of the ruling party.
The battle line has been drawn in the race for who emerges the running mate of the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.
Those currently being favoured for the ticket are former presidential aspirant and Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.
Naija News understands that the two South-South governors are lobbying their fellow governors to back their vice-presidential bid.
It was gathered that the Rivers State governor has firmly planted his feet in Abuja to continue his plot to realise an Atiku-Wike presidential ticket.
Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has denied paying tribute to the former Lagos Governor and presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.
Soyinka was reacting to a tribute to Tinubu attributed to him which had gone viral shortly after the former governor won the APC presidential ticket.
The playwright asked the general public to ignore the tribute meant to deceive them and to be on alert to the antics of faceless cowards spreading falsehood.
Soyinka added that he had never eulogised Tinubu on his political accomplishments, adding that he did not operate or own social media accounts.
